Woolworth Mansion

The Woolworth Mansion is one of the three mansions built by Mr. Frank Woolworth, the head of the Woolworth retail chain as a gift to his daughter. The onus of coming up with a plan and design was laid on the capable shoulders of C.P.H. Gilbert, an architect known for his French Gothic style designs.

The Woolworth Mansion came up in 1911and was completed sometime in 1916. It is a huge estate with an area of 18,000 square feet and the impressive limestone façade of the seven storey home is just a preview of the magnificent interiors which can be seen from the foyer which opens up to a splendid entry hall which has an enormous fireplace, a powder room and a grand main staircase which leads to the parlor on the first floor.

The drawing room of the parlor has been done up on a large scale with floor to ceiling windows, high ceilings, a huge fireplace and luxurious furniture. It leads to a dining hall that can easily accommodate 50 guests.

The third floor has a sprawling wood paneled library, powder room, a bar and two bedroom suites with luxurious baths all done up splendidly. The fourth and fifth floors comprise a master bedroom, two large bedrooms, and a couple of sitting rooms, full baths and a gym all done up with attention to the smallest detail.

A brilliant stained glass skylight just above the staircase covers the five floors of the mansion. The sixth floor houses an office while the seventh floor includes the two bedroom staff suite with a full bath and access to the elevator which connects all seven floors of the mansion.

What sets it apart from other mansions of that era is that it is done up in its original grand style and its opulence and grandiose interiors have been well maintained.
