If time or space is something you feel you’re lacking, a visit to the Namib Desert, the world’s oldest, is where it all stands still.
‘Kulala’ means to sleep and is also the name of the innovative luxury chalets that will offer you solace from the heat and dryness of the desert. There are only eleven of these, and this exclusive little hide-away that really is in the middle of nowhere, offers a rugged luxury experience in the middle of the desert, where the rusty palette of the Sosussvlei dunes is the only color contrast with the earthen tones of the arid landscape.

Even though it’s modern and comfortable Little Kuala’s focus has been on creating something that’s eco-friendly and blends in with the natural environment. Special care has been taken to emulate the textures and colors of the desert landscape in the architecture and interior décor. Grass, stone and canvas come together to create a space at one with the natural vastness that surrounds it.
While the accommodation is luxurious, it’s understated and humble. The main feature is the “rooftop skybed” which makes for romantic star gazing sessions under Namibia’s crystal clear night skies. Each of the little kulalas offers a private plunge pool for instant summer relief and indoor and outdoor showers to keep you comfortable. You’ll always be comfortable in the desert as these units are temperature-controlled.
You can go out looking for a range of desert animals on a game drive, or take the scenic route above with hot air ballooning that will give you the best view by far. G & T’s are on offer every evening at the main lodge bar where you can watch the sand swallow the sun or enjoy sightings of wildlife drinking from the water hole and just enjoy the space and time.
