The mother-child connection runs deep; this, we all know. To what extent is that fact true when it comes to style and fashion? Do children naturally inherit their mother’s style and fashion sense?
The general consensus is a resounding “yes” – children’s sense of fashion and style preferences tends to be largely shaped by those of their mothers. After all, mothers are the ones who dress us as little ones and, even as we mature, are there to help shape our fashion sense as we go job hunting, on dates, and down the altar.
Simply put, mothers help us develop and define who we are and how we wish to present ourselves. This is particularly palpable among some celebrities and giants of the fashion world.
For instance, Victoria Beckham’s son was ranked 26 on British GQ magazine’s Best Dressed List in 2011. Tiny Suri Cruise is typically seen in public with her mom dressed to the nines. And high fashion is certainly shared between mother and daughter in the case of individuals like socialite/model Andrea Dellal and her socialite/model daughter, Alice.
Of course, a mother’s direction can sometimes backfire – her children grow into teenagers and young adults and, in seeking their own independence, may reject their mother’s fashion prodding.
Over time, this always works itself out because, ultimately, a mother’s style is like other aspects of her being: simply a framework that their (adult) children can look to when needed, even if simply for inspiration.
