Holy Luxury: Maastricht’s Kruisherenhotel, Netherlands

Posted in Getaways & Vacations on November 20, 2008

Churches may not be what people usually have in mind when they think ‘luxury hotel,’ yet that in itself is the genius behind the idea for the Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht, Netherlands.

What was once a monastery in the 15th century is now a breathtaking fusion of tradition and modernity. The hotel presents its visitors with the splendour of the historical exterior, the stained glass windows and the light shining through, reflected onto modern furnishings as well as newly renovated spaces for dining and other activities.

There is a glass elevator that connects the original church to the monastery area. The whole estate now hosts 60 rooms filled with modern furnishings, conference rooms, library, boutique and coffee bar. The beautiful monastery gardens have always been an attraction as “a haven in the midst of a vibrant city center.”

Maastricht is a simple train ride away from Brussels and Amsterdam, and also has train routes between London, Paris and other German stations.
