Purisme Letter Opener: $450 of Carbon-Fiber Technology

It’s already won the prestigious international Red Dot Design Award, and gotten itself into an exhibit at the 2008 21st Biennial of Industrial Design in Ljubljana. Weighing in at 17 grams, the Austrian-designed Purisme letter opener costs €350 ($450 USD).

Inspired by racing speedboats, the letter opener is made entirely of carbon fiber – woven carbon set in epoxy. There are shimmers and glimmers when you look closely, and an almost 3D effect in the patterns. Very futuristic.

Designer Mario Zeppetzauer created a product which not only is visually appealing, but fits well in the palm of the hand and gives you great grip. Measuring at 25 cm, the opener never veers off or makes a tear in the envelope.

The designer says he personally inspects each opener before despatch, and has also electromagnetically encoded a special message in each one. The Purisme letter opener comes in a felt case like a luxury pen.

Aston Martin DB7 coated with 24-Carat Gold

“Forget the everyday optional extras offered by car manufacturers, this is the King Midas of customization and the gold standard of luxury,” said Jacques Blanc, a self-proclaimed modern day ‘Goldfinger’ and artistic director of car customization company Alchemist.

This one of a kind 24-carat gold plated Aston Martin DB7 was finished off with seven additional diamonds for that extra ‘bling’. The car appeared at the gala premiere of the new 007 James Bond movie: Quantum of Solace, in London. Princes Harry & William were amongst the attendees – surely admiring the details of the DB7 as well.

No price tag has been mentioned, yet speculations are in the price range of “a lot.”

Alchemist is a London car-customization firm which specialises in luxury cars such as Aston Martin, Porsche, Bentley and Mercedes. They have a patented process for their techniques in adding gold leaf to the car exteriors. Prices for the one rooftop start at around £12,500.

Expensive Graffiti: Wode by Boudicca (Blue Perfume)

Correction: expensive disppearing graffiti with hints of herbal spicy elements and floral essences. The new Wode perfume by Boudicca sprays on blue but doesn’t stain, and changes to clear in a matter of minutes. Apparently there are also hidden messages in Boudicca garments which this Wode can reveal.

The idea for the blue paint was inspired by the legend of Queen Boudicea and her cobalt blue war paint. Ferocious and fearless was the effect they were going for as they advanced on their enemies with blue paint made from ‘Woad’ plant extract.

Ingredients in the modern Wode include extracts of hemlock, the ‘suicide poison’ from Queen Boudicea’s time, and raw opium. (Very diluted percentages, of course).

Geza Shoe from fragrance company Escentric Molecules is part of the authorship of Boudicca’s first fragrance.

Boudicca’s known in the fashion world as the ‘other bad boys’ in the same pack with the likes of Alexander McQueen.

Japanese Concept Kitchen: Nobody Isola S

This little kitchen island will make you want to look twice when you think to yourself, Is it… really what I think it is? Yes. A zen-like shape of ying-yang inspired forms which moves and is adjustable for all your catering needs. And fits back snugly into the perfect circle.

Great for small, upscale spaces. With electric stove, sink and compartmentalised drawers, what more could a modern day host or hostess want?

The kitchen island is called ‘Isola S’ and is part of the ‘Nobody’ collection by Japanese company Tokyo Kitchen.  Prices are not yet available, however it seems certain it won’t be cheap.

Tokyo Kitchen’s other products include furniture and fittings. All very minimalistic. All very sheek. Just browsing the website – even without Japanese knowledge – inspires me. (And loving the nature/techno music; you’ll see what I mean when you visit).

Their web shop is filled with everyday items such as spoons for USD $26 each.
