The Baltic states are made up of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia and ooze an old world charm that is peppered with new world technology and modern comforts. We thought we’d take a long weekend off, and these are our three top places to stay if you’re looking for romance and history:

Stikliai – Lithuania
Set in the picturesque village of Vilnius this hotel is only 20-minutes from the airport. It’s surrounded by quaint, cobbled streets and pretty flowers and has an Old World charm of its own.
The 44 rooms are comfortable and stylish and are all decorated in different styles. Choose from a Gothic, Baroque or modern suite and enjoy heated floors and snug soft finishes. The hotel also boasts magnificent woodwork and carvings, so be on the look-out for the finer details.

Hotel Bergs – Latvia
This unusual piece of architecture dates back to the nineteenth century and it’s perched now on a street renowned for its shopping selection.
Hotel Bergs merges a historical feel with contemporary fine art to create a masterpiece. The hotel features 38 lofts, apartments and studios and is only about half an hour’s drive from the airport. It’s also only a few minutes away from the Latvian National opera and a few other cultural gems.

Padaste Manor – Estonia
We took a detour from the city for this one and made our way to Muhu Island instead. This impressive manor was previously the residence of a sixteenth century Danish king, and the details in the manor show exactly that.
There are 24 suites and rooms to choose from, each with its own sense of exclusivity and grandeur. The manor is set on impeccable grounds with manicured gardens and a peaceful ambience. It’s a two hour drive and ferry ride from Tallinn Airport and worth every mile of the journey.
