Ian Callum, Designer Director of Jaguar, has been awarded The Walpole Award for British Luxury Design Talent for “maintaining the highest standard of British Design Talent through innovation and design, contributing to British craftsmanship in 2008.”

“I feel honoured to have won this award, particularly from Walpole, which wholly represents the British luxury industry. It is even more gratifying when Jaguar design receives such acknowledgment from outside the car industry,” said Callum.

“Our award winners exemplify Britain’s ability to produce world class talent. We are delighted to recognise Ian Callum and Jaguar’s success at the Walpole Awards and Medal of Excellence 2008. Ian Callum joins a prestigious group of previous winners including fashion designers Christopher Bailey and Betty Jackson,” said Julia Carrick, CEO of Walpole.

Ian Callum joined Jaguar in 1999 as Design Director and is responsible for the award-winning XK sports car, voted Top Gear magazine’s Car of the Year in 2006 – and the latest addition to the Jaguar model line-up, the Jaguar XF, voted What Car? magazine’s ‘Car of the Year’ in 2008. Ian also led the design teams responsible for Jaguar concept cars including R-Coupe, RD-6, Advanced Lightweight Coupe and the C-XF which was named ‘Best in Show’ concept by Autoweek at the Detroit Motor Show, 2007.

It’s a car that looks like a classic yet the interior has plenty of modern technological perks. All electronic displays with black panel technology, where the panel turns completely black when the ignition is turned off. The result is a matt black surface that lights up magically when the start button is pressed.

“It is the most frugal full-sized luxury car on sale, and it has the lowest emissions. It’s good fun to drive and has more than enough space and luxury appointments inside,” writes Andrew Frankel for the Times Online.

Overall his review was about 4 out of 5 stars.

BMW claims that “The arrival of the new BMW 7 Series marks the beginning of a new era in automotive design.” Which era exactly, we are not too sure, as it seems like a pretty similar era to all the other auto-eras before… just with a touch more techie stuff.

LushWheels: Bolwell Nagari – Almost Green

Posted in Exotic & Sports Cars on November 14, 2008

Everybody’s going green these days, and really, there is nothing wrong with that. The Bolwell Nagari is rumoured to be releasing an electric engine version soon. This would indeed be the excuse we could use to convince ourselves just how vital it is to purchase an environmentally friendly car, and at the same time, it just as equally needs to be a sports car.

Right now the Bolwell Nagari uses a carbon-intensive composite chassis and body and weighs a little over one ton. It’s got a 295 horsepower Toyota-made 3.5 liter V6 engine, and has paddle-shifted transmission. The transmission sits in the middle of the car and powers the rear wheels.

The Bolwell Nagari is an Australian sportscar that was first produced in 1969. ‘Nagari’ is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘flowing.’

Bolwell was started by three brothers: Campbell, Winston and Graeme Bolwell, who were “like most young red blooded Aussie males who loved cars, mostly fast cars.”

LushWheels: Hermès does a Smart Car

Posted in Exotic & Sports Cars on November 14, 2008

It’s really amazing how many colors it comes in, as well as how much you can actually fit in this tiny little car. Very smart indeed. The leather interiors are all Hermès leather and comes in ten colors in total: from golds, greens, pinks, blues to the Hermès signature orange.

The unveiling marked Smart Car’s 10-year anniversary. Seems like just yesterday when I got angry at a Smart Car taking up a perfectly normal-sized parking space which appeared to be ‘empty’ before I arrived closer. (In fact it probably was yesterday… grrr…) But I can’t stay mad at them forever. Smart cars really are too cute! Especially in so many hot colors.

Hermès and anything will definitely add not only great publicity but also an increase in sales – let’s hope. For nobody dares to predict anything anymore in these volatile financial times… one thing’s for sure, last time Hermès collaborated with a car marker it retailed at $2.3 million. Smart car in this case is valued at a ‘bargain’ of $48,564
